They used to be good and their prices were reasonable. Then they got greedy and their prices are nowadays outta control. Their points Rewards program which was also good turned into shit. It used to be after like three coffees you'd qualify for a free one. Now you gotta buy something like 15 of them first. Their updated app is shit too. It actually stole the money balance I had on balance on it.

Dunkin Dounts subreddit is loaded with stories about their evilness , like this-
I have worked at dunkin for just about 9 year and called out of work maybe 3-4 times. I had an opportunity for a better job so I took it. When I told my gm and gave the proper notice. All I got in return was alright ill write it down. 9 yrs there and thats what I got. Make you feel crappy

I just passed a similar vacant structure in my SW town this week, thinking all that is lost when this floor plan/layout of donut shop has been abandoned. Back in the day you could hang at the counter, watch the donuts being made, etc.
You would see students, cops, corporate types at the counter, everybody it seemed.
I miss it.

Starbucks fucked their rewards program a year or so ago, so it took twice as many purchases to get a free coffee. So I moved to 7-11. Their rewards program still gives you a free coffee after six cups.

Yes, DD went to hell a long while ago. The donuts got smaller and smaller, and you only tasted the palm oil.
I don't think there are any good donut chains left in the U.S. Krispy Kreme are too sweet for my taste and too small for the price. The indie donut shops charger $3 and up for a single donut. It's just a donut, people.

But then you are drinking 7-11 coffee, R6.
| by Anonymous | reply 8 | January 21, 2024 11:57 PM |
DD coffee is crap. 7-11 isn't much better, though.
| by Anonymous | reply 9 | January 21, 2024 11:58 PM |
I agree, R2.
I remember those half-circle counters from growing up in upstate NY in the '80s.
The people-watching was fun.

I don’t understand people who buy coffee. My coffee made at home is better and fresher, costs a fraction, and takes no more time. If it’s the disposable cup, you can buy those on Amazon.
| by Anonymous | reply 12 | January 22, 2024 12:57 AM |
Are DD’s franchises? When I go to them in the U.S. they’re staffed with Indians. And Indians are notorious about cutting corners to save money, which explains the lack of quality.

DD breakfast sandwich gave me explosive diarrhea, hot and cold sweats, full body tremors, stomach cramps for a solid three days. Seriously, I was so sick I thought I was going to die. Almost called an ambulance but I don’t have insurance.

Donuts are the muffins of the non-muffin world.
I don't get the appeal of either
| by Anonymous | reply 15 | January 22, 2024 1:08 AM |
Dunkin' is no longer about Donuts. They are in competition with Starbucks and are all about coffee and breakfast sandwiches.
| by Anonymous | reply 16 | January 22, 2024 1:10 AM |
If it’s owned and stuffed by whites they’re fine and tasty. If it’s Indian run hell no. They sell every stale crumb. In the warmer times, their fucking donuts are melted and old and still for sale.
| by Anonymous | reply 17 | January 22, 2024 1:13 AM |
Here’s the core of the problem . In the olden days you walked into a donut shop, ordered, paid in change and left.
Everybody and every store having an APP you must use is beyond crazy. I walked into a Starbucks a few years ago . No one waiting . Yet I was told it would be a long wait . - why? There’s nobody here - oh, they all ordered on the app? Don’t you have it?
Left and never went back . Their coffee sucks anyway

"And Indians are notorious about cutting corners to save money"
As shown by the thread about the tech CEO in India who died making his "big entrance" to a company event due to a cable snapping. They probably save two bucks in cabling and ended up killing the boss.

My very first part time job in high school was at DD from 1978 -81. It was the second franchise store owned by a Greek family (damn that son and his cousins were hotter than hell - all in their 20s, I was 14 -17 yo). Minimum wage was $2.15 /hr and I worked my ass off for them. They had pink-and-white tile floors which I had to wash every day, two times per shift. Donuts were baked on the premises ($1.69 / dozen) and I would 'finish' them off - filing the donuts with jelly / Bavarian Kreme, frosting the donuts, powdering the donuts with either sugar or cinnamon. Then of course - waiting on customers at the take-out and 'on the counter'. If I was lucky, someone would leave a dime tip on the counter for their coffee and donut. (Coffee was served in their ceramic cup, no refills, for 35 cents a cup). Donuts were 25 cents each. We offered 32 different kinds of donuts 24 / 7. After four hours, we dumped them and made fresh (their logo was 'Fresh every four hours'). Coffee Rolls were also offered, and before I left in early 1981, they introduced muffins, cookies and brownies (delicious). The donuts and muffins were so much bigger than what they have now, and were so good. In New England, they sent Mister Donut, Bess Eaton and Tim Horton's packing. Did the same with Krispy Kreme in the early 2000s.
The company was headquartered in Canton, MA. By the early 90s they were bought out (I believe by the same company which owned Chili's) and things went downhill. They've changed ownership several more times since, going after Starbucks.

I had some special donuts at their Potsdammer Platz location. So pricey at €6 each (compared to €4 for the basic sort), that I was about to leave empty-handed then bought a couple just for sport. I have to say they were delicious and very good quality and ingredients, not like any other Dunkin Donuts I've had.
| by Anonymous | reply 25 | January 22, 2024 8:35 PM |
Why anyone would go to Dunkin for donuts anymore is beyond me. They are garbage these days. Might as well get your donuts from the local grocery store's bakery department and save a few pennies.b
Mom and pop donut shops are where it's really at. Good quality, reasonable prices, and they aren't open til 10 at night selling you tough donuts either.
Just make sure they mainly sell traditional donuts. If their focus is donuts with lucky charms on top or similar, beware. You're probably in for an average donut at twice the price.

There's a bakery near my house which has been open since 1935 (a great Italian bakery - founders were from Italy, now their grandchildren run it). Since I was a child, we'd get their donuts every Sunday morning after church - still the very best chocolate frosted and glazed donuts. And only $1.50 each. You need to get them by 11 am each day - or they sell out.

In New England you can't throw a dead rat without hitting a Dunkin' Donuts and I've never understood why it's so popular. Their donuts have a weird chemical taste (likely chock full of chemical preservatives) and their sandwiches are such fucking cholesterol bombs you might as well inject lard directly into your bloodstream. I just don't get it.
| by Anonymous | reply 45 | January 23, 2024 3:51 AM |
The last time I had DD, it tasted like someone took two different, already used coffee grind flavors and brewed them again to save money.
All the donuts tasted three days old. And I’m betting the Indian wives don’t get paid either.

A local mom and pop donut chain opened ujp a franchise location in my SW town /
They sell out the donuts regularly by days end.
They have a small staff / also do a few sandwiches.... but always busy.
And of course people will pay for quality, and knowing they will get fresh daily.
Not rocket science.

Market Basket, a local supermarket chain, sells great, fresh, store-made donuts and cinnamon rolls for 99 cents each.
People were really pissed off when they went up from 79 cents last year. To sort-of appease people, now if you buy four (rhymes with fat whore) it’s $3.69.

I have a sister who worked at a 24hr Dunkin on graveyard. It was at a truck stop, and she turned tricks in the bathroom. Left a pot of coffee on the counter, empty coffee cups with doughnuts on a plate. Did the trick, and charged newcomers for the coffee and doughnuts. Served them right for paying her as an independent contractor. 😂
