Did the Golden Girls have a pool?

It was mentioned in one or two episodes, but never shown?

by Anonymousreply 29December 16, 2022 2:00 PM

I never watched more than a handful of episodes but if they did and never used it, it was dumb. If I was retired old lady with some money I'd be sitting around it having umbrella drinks all day.

Sophia: It's not for me to say. But I'll tell you a story. Picture it: Miami, 1987. A house, the only one in the neighborhood without a pool. But I digress. Four women, friends. They laugh, they cry, they eat. They love, they hate, they eat. They dream, they hope, they eat. Every time you turn around, they eat.

Rose: Sophia, are those four women us?

Sophia: Look in the mirror, blubber-butt.

First off none of the girl was retired, except for Sophia. Second they weren't rich at all. They could hardly pay the contractor to have their leaky roof fixed and when the guy came to propose to equip the house with an alarm, they could only only afford the bare minimum alarm system, i.e. the one with the price tag under $1k.

But they sure had $$ for those floor length beaded gowns for any local fund raiser

Blanche owned a four bedroom house in Miami and only worked 12 hours a week at a Museum more for the fun of it than needing the income r4. I'm sure the rent money she had coming in and money from her family/husband kept her pretty comfortable.

R5 You can buy cheap gowns with plastic beads at any Ross or TJ Maxx.

The lanai is where the girls did all of their nude sunbathing, especially Sophia and Dorothy.

Solved!

I found a reference in the episode where Sophia and Max are married (S04E07), when they come back from the honey moon and are looking for a place:

Sophia: We just need a roof over our heads for a couple of days while we look. Doesn't have to be anything fancy.

Blanche: Would you all like to stay here with us? Here?

Sophia: Gee, that didn't even cross my mind. What do you think, Max?

Max: Well, there's no pool...

And another one in S03E11:

Sophia: Picture it: Miami, 1987. A house, the only one in the neighborhood without a pool.

I think on the failed Empty Nest pilot Dorothy mentioned that they had a pool, but in other GG episodes it was stated that they didn’t.

by Anonymousreply 10December 15, 2022 3:11 PM

they were all lying cunts

by Anonymousreply 11December 15, 2022 3:12 PM

Dorothy mentioned a neighbor threw up in their pool at a party.

by Anonymousreply 12December 15, 2022 4:29 PM

The pool was mentioned in the Empty Nest episode and that was it.

by Anonymousreply 13December 15, 2022 4:36 PM

The Golden Girls were infamous for their continuity errors and numerous inconsistencies. Dorothy's chronic fatigue syndrome being maybe one of the worst offenders.

Did they joke about Blanche and pool boy?

by Anonymousreply 15December 15, 2022 5:33 PM

I think it can be argued that they weren't talking about a pool they owned on the Empty Nest backdoor.

Thank god, no. Can you imagine? I love Rue, but not in a bikini, no.

We only got those from charities for, um, sexy needy people.

R5, Blanche would buy expensive dresses, wear them and return them.

[quote]BLANCHE: Uh, price tag pinned to right sleeve.

[quote]DOROTHY: What are you doing?

[quote]BLANCHE: I'm taking the tags off this dress and saving them so I can put them back on again tomorrow. That way, when I take it back, they won't know I've worn it.

[quote]DOROTHY: You're going to wear a dress, then return - Blanche, that's illegal.

[quote]BLANCHE: Oh, it is not illegal. It's just... wrong. See, I love the dress, but I can't afford it, not $300 worth. And I have a late date tonight, so I want to look stunning for it. Besides, it's not like I'm gonna wear it all that much. I'm just gonna put it on and take it off. Then put it on and come home and take it off again.

[...]

[quote]It seems that before I returned the dress, I was so busy putting the price tags back on, I neglected to remove the dry cleaning tag. Not only did they refuse to take the dress back, the store manager had the gall to accuse me of being dishonest.

They had a pool only on a few occasions when Sophia didn't wake in time.

by Anonymousreply 22December 15, 2022 9:25 PM

Yes, it was called Golden Pond.

by Anonymousreply 23December 15, 2022 9:29 PM

No they did not have a pool, just a lanai with loungers and patio furniture.

by Anonymousreply 24December 15, 2022 10:03 PM

Their financial health was all over the map.

They’re introduced as experienced golfers ($$) and before you know it the clubs are gone and they’re freaking out over a thousand dollars like it’s a king’s ransom and by season seven, Blanche was the fashionably dressed widow whose husband left her in good stead and was making dough from renting to friends.

but by the end they were selling Blanche as the widow making mint on renting out rooms to friends.

25 grown men (I assume) are debating this question?

by Anonymousreply 26December 15, 2022 10:27 PM

This thread and others make me think that Datalounge is basically a secret underground civilization of people who have never seen the actual world above. The only clues they have to it are some ancient videotapes of the complete series of "I Love Lucy" and "The Golden Girls," and they watch these over and over again, obsessing about them, going over every last detail, and wondering just how life in the sunlit world above can possibly correspond to the details of what they're seeing on the holy videotapes.
