I just started watching Elvis. I’ve never been an Elvis fan particularly.
But Austin Butler just seems so… TWINKY… in that role. And he has too much makeup on. And he’s lanky. He looks like a Sean Cody model. I don’t recall Elvis being so girly.
Is this the best actor that Baz Luhrmann could find for the role? Or was this the most fuckable actor he could find for the role?

I guess I'm going to have to watch this movie again. I thought it was an ok movie, and AB was good, but it wasn't THAT impressive to me and I do like Elvis. Tom Banks being in it, didn't do anything to make me like it more either. He was just "there".

Totally agree with OP. Butler is a skinny twink. Though he sometimes sounded vaguely like Presley, he looked nothing like him. I’m no Presley fan, but Elvis had a strong, sensual, distinctive face. Butler’s little features are non-descript.

R38, Appearance, I won't argue much. Though in profile in the movie, Austin is a dead-ringer. Watch the scene with Priscilla in the bedroom again (if, indeed, you watched it once before). Also, when he enters as Movie Elvis in blue and white, he looks identical. But much more than facially, Austin had EP's height, carriage, walk, shoulder shrug, crinkled nose in laughter, gaze (especially in the '68 Special performance), and, according to Cilla, Elvis's "rage" uncannily perfect.
But as to your opinion that Austin "sometimes sounded vaguely like Elvis," I must take issue, because you're just flat out wrong. Straight-up comparisons of both men with "That's All-Time Right (Mama)," "Trouble," "Let's Play House," and "Hound Dog" support my position. Well, actually prove it.
This is Austin not even particularly trying, as it's just a camera test.

This is Elvis's very first performance of "That's All Right " Now, it isn't the version Austin sings, but I'm leaving it here because of the DIALOGUE. . In the movie's "Louisiana Hayride" scene, Austin says Elvis's same words, and sounds 100% the same. 100%.
