I read that the contempt towards military spouses started when Michelle Obama started advocating for them. It's been the norm for thousands of years for soldiers to have dependents.

I used to have a customer service job where I came into contact with a lot of military families. I wouldn't say the women were always fat but they were always VERY young with (imo) too many kids. A typical family would be an overbearing dudebro covered in muscles who looked about 30, a meek woman who looked about 20, two toddlers and a newborn. I didn't envy them.

R2 Unfortunately it's not a gag. There's actual slang within the military for women like this, "dependa's", "dependasaurus" and such
"What is a dependa? ‘Dependa’ is a horrible insult mainly used by military spouses to put each other down. Every military spouse is a dependent (unless they are active duty), but to be a dependa infers that someone is useless or stupid. The stereotypical dependa is an overweight woman who sits at home all day doing absolutely nothing to contribute to her family, while causing drama and complaining about all that she is entitled to because of her husband’s rank."
