I have never felt so much pity and sadness for such a sick and twisted character. I thought she was a quirky presence in the other stuff I'd seen her in ("Suspiria", "A Cure for Wellness"), but this convinced me that she is an actress of the highest caliber. Her range in this film was jaw-dropping and deserving of an Oscar nomination.

Variety is suggesting she deserves Oscar recognition for this performance.

Thank you for telling me that, r1.

Everyone I know has been raving about her performance as one of the best of the year and I completely agree. It's absolutely deserving of an Oscar, but I fear that it'll go the way of Toni Collette in Hereditary. She deserved it, too, but the Academy was probably turned off by the subject matter.

Marty Scorsese gave his stamp of approval; rare for a horror movie.

I just saw it last night, she was definitely good, but I found her vocal fry completely grating on my nerves.
| by Anonymous | reply 5 | September 25, 2022 11:02 PM |
R5 the rough voice seemed like a deliberate choice to me, especially in some of the key scenes (mainly the monologue, which occurs after she's had an enormous crying fit, so it makes sense). The character is sad, in some ways pathetic, downtrodden and worn down by the world. I thought it worked. Goth's actual speaking voice is quite high-pitched and light; no vocal fry. In interviews, she has an upbeat, nervy, childlike energy that I find endearing. She sounded completely different playing this role.

Her vocal fry makes her sound amateurish.

I absolutely loved X and have not seen Pearl yet. I think Mia is a wonderful actress and probably a saint to deal with her husband in real life.
I would totally dig her getting a nomination for this performance!

R8 I also loved X to pieces. Possibly the best slasher movie of the 21st century thus far. However, I think that Pearl, while not a better *slasher* movie (it’s really not a slasher flick at all) is a superior film in general—and it’s largely due to the Mia’s performance.
| by Anonymous | reply 9 | September 25, 2022 11:22 PM |
R9- That's what I am reading- That Pearl is the better film!
I thought that Pearl was going to be a straight to video type of low level disaster.
I am so glad that I was wrong. Cannot wait to see it now.

I just saw Pearl. Whoa. I’m shook. I didn’t know what I was seeing, I tried to avoid reviews and the preview, I just heard it was good. Turns out it was better than that, it was superb. The opening scene is unambiguous that your dealing with an unwell person. Then the hour that follows is slow and subtle, I even checked my watch a few times. But patience is rewarded. The whole second hour I was horrified while occasionally bursting into uncomfortable laughter. I’ve never been so conflicted watching a movie. I was alone in the theater and I wasn’t sure whether my reactions were ‘normal’. Mia Goth deserves recognition for a singular performance. The monologue was so authentic and self aware while simultaneously exposing a sick mind. The movie isn’t for everyone but damn it was good.

Okay, who gave the better performance — Kathy Bates in Misery or Mia Goth in Pearl?
| by Anonymous | reply 13 | September 26, 2022 7:29 AM |
Many-layered interpretation of nacreous proportions.
| by Anonymous | reply 14 | September 26, 2022 7:53 AM |
I thought Pearl was terribly boring. It was joyless - the trailer made the film look so much more fun and interesting. This is a story of abuse, isolation & loneliness. I left the theatre so annoyed because I was really looking for something fun and not depressing. I also thought X was overrated. Her acting was fine but absolutely no comparison to Kath Bate's performance in Misery as mentioned above. I could not wait for this to end.

I thought she was excellent in Emma and much better than that Alien looking girl……

Is OP the artist formerly known as the "Jamie Lee is gonna get Oscar nomination for Halloween" troll?
| by Anonymous | reply 17 | October 2, 2022 9:49 AM |
R17 no, I fucking hated that movie.
| by Anonymous | reply 18 | October 2, 2022 10:37 AM |
The Academy does not go for low brow horror - only when they are desperate to fill out the final five nominees.

Saw Pearl two nights ago. Really loved the saturated color palette, the carefully framed long shots, and Mia Goth’s unexpected incredible performance. The 9 minute monologue was jaw dropping, and should be noticed by casting directors and real directors (ala Scorsese) and lead to important roles for Goth in the future.

She’s ok. Theda steals the movie.
| by Anonymous | reply 21 | October 2, 2022 3:16 PM |
While I did not like it, I went to Rotten Tomatoes and it looks like OP is not the only one who thinks she might up for an Oscar nom. That 9 minute monologue might be the scene where she earns her nomination. I think I found it so annoying was that it wasn't really a slasher or horror film. It was more a drama of abuse. If you wait to the very end of the critics, there is a teaser - this looks like part of a trilogy. The teasers has Obsession by Automatron blasting and then the camera pans over the valley to the Hollywood sign taking place in 1985 - it think is called MaXXXella or something along those lines. I feel so underwhelmed by Ti West, X, and Pearl that I don't know if I can see another one but I am curious.

MaXXXine is the sequel that roles at the very end of the credits.

I just rewatched this again on Blu-ray. Looks fantastic. It would be a real shocker if she got recognition and I doubt she will, but if any performance in a modern horror film deserves it, it’s definitely this. Toni Collette didn’t get a nomination for Hereditary either, and she should have (even though I found her slightly too histrionic at times).

Goth is certainly one of the rare performers whose work is completely devoid of self-consciousness, which is something I appreciate greatly in an actor. She doesn't seem remotely concerned with looking kooky, crazy, or even ugly—she's too immersed in the work to have any sense of vanity. You don't see this often, so it really stands out to me when an actor is capable of giving a performance like this.

Muriel, I demand you shut down this thread. The Oscar is mine!
| by Anonymous | reply 26 | November 18, 2022 8:20 AM |
R25 I agree with this. It's a surprisingly rare quality in an actor, but it's that exact quality that keeps an actor working for decades and turning out memorable performances. I think Mia has potential to be one of the greats.

R26 fuck off , you washed-up whore, I’M the new reigning blonde Aussie—see my film, “Babylon”, in theaters this Christmas.

Goth is absolutely brilliant. She deserves an oscar but it won't happen
| by Anonymous | reply 29 | November 19, 2022 2:15 AM |
I'll add that it won't happen because of Oscars tendency to avoid rewarding this genre and their preference for bland and boring performances by narcoleptic actresses with no actual spark.
| by Anonymous | reply 30 | November 19, 2022 2:17 AM |
I did not like it and I went in excited to see it. Goth's performance was solid, but this was not the horror film portrayed in the trailer. It was a sad tale about an isolated girl/woman living in an. abusive household. It was not a good film. though the performances were strong.
| by Anonymous | reply 31 | November 19, 2022 8:40 AM |
After hearing so much about it, I decided to watch it. I can't believe people truly think this merits an Oscar. Perhaps it’s for the best that the Academy don't regard horror as a legitimate category. "Mia Goth" (how original), performance was so over the top, and the accent sounded trite and corny. It felt like I was watching a comedy; her stilted face in the end credits was hilarious.
There’s so much bad acting in movies now that people will accept anything as a great performance, even if it’s only passably good.

Go enjoy your Marvel movies, R32
| by Anonymous | reply 33 | April 15, 2023 7:22 PM |
I had no idea she is British or non-American. She's a fun performer who goes for it and is not obsessed with vanity. I like those "brave" performances from actresses especially, who are just willing to "go there". I am excited to see Maxxxine and whatever else she does. I am not in love with this trilogy, but I am really loving the performances.

She was fine. That movie was so completely devoid of any charm whatsoever that no one really stood out as having a great performance. The candy color palette was the only star.

Themes of isolation made sense for a film made during the pandemic. Frustrated and angry women are frightening.
