Butterfly McQueen's horrible death...

And the shameless looting of her cottage. I mean, really!

Ironic when she lived through the burning of Atlanta.

I am surprised about the looting. The neighborhood in which she lived, isn't the ghetto. It is a respectable working class/lower middle class black neighborhood. Also, her burns had to be extremely severe because the Augusta hospital she was taken to is the premier hospital in the Southeast for burns. Basically, if you suffer major burns in the Southeast you end up in Augusta. They are the ones that saved Travis Barker, drummer of Blink-182, after he was burned in a plane crash.

How sad to think her body wasnt even cold and those "respectable' neighbors descended on her poor house like a pack of fucking vultures. Heres another disgusting story for you...I was at my local hospital about 2 in the afternoon seeing a friend and a gent who had been shot 5 times drove himself to the emergency room (he lived) and since he was badly injured he took out about 4 cars when he drove in. As he is sitting in his car, bleeding, someone decided to help themselves to his wallet and jewelry. Right there in broad daylight in front of a crowd. I saw all this because I walked out right as he missed my car by a gnats hair and hit the others. I didnt see who robbed him,too many folks milling around. I had to wait several hours before I could retrieve my car and leave, thats how I overheard the cops talking about someone robbing him .

Scarlett could have handled those looters.

Butterfly was a strange woman who lived way below her means. I well remember when the fire happened. She owned this house, but she lived in a tiny cottage (the house she died in) that was not much more than a shanty house behind this one. I assume she rented this one out as she owned a few rental properties (which she left to the renters in her will).

For reasons well known to her.

Was it spontaneous combustion?

It reminds me of the death of Victor Sen Yung, he played Charlie Chan's 2nd son Jimmy, and later he ended up playing Hop Sing on Bonanza. He died from a gas leak, and was apparently very poor.

It was very decent of her to leave those houses to the tenants. She was an interesting, if odd, woman.

Toss a lamb chop in the oven and it'll cook itself.

She also left the contents of a checking account to the Freedom From Religion Foundation in Wisconsin. Seems Prissy might have been an atheist.

Buck would never have BEEN in the cottage!

(And yes, McQueen was a proud atheist.)

Butterfly was an avowed atheist. This was no secret.

Loved her!

She was a standby for Addaperle in the original cast of "The Wiz". Those who saw her said she was embarrassingly bad.

I remember her from this ABC Afterschool Special starring Robbie Rist from The Brady Bunch.

The McQueen family really wasn't a fortunate one: her nephew Steve got that cancer from asbestos exposure and died from it and poor Butterfly perished in that terrible fire.
