Bruno Mars New Album With Anderson Paak

Their first single "Leave The Door Open" is like a 70's RnB ballad and is actually pretty good and sounds authentic 70's.

Meh. Does this mellow fit the Zeitgeist?

by Anonymousreply 1March 5, 2021 4:33 PM

OMG. It's like Teddy Pendergrass reborn. This guy has a real '70s sensibility and a real love for soul/r&b, and it shows in the work. Marvin Gaye, Prince or Al Green would be honored.

BTW, is it true that he's not even a little bit black? Because he deliberately tries to make himself look it, and carries himself as if he is. The vibe, swag and even his accent. But he's definitely authentic, unlike the manufactured Biebers, Timberlakes and Robin Thickes the industry has shoved down our throats until the public got over them.

by Anonymousreply 2March 5, 2021 4:52 PM

This is what Timberlake wanted to be but couldn't.

by Anonymousreply 3March 5, 2021 4:53 PM

A true artist. One of the last in the mainstream.

by Anonymousreply 4March 5, 2021 4:53 PM

I love that you can hear it's an actual band, not just beats from a computer. Bruno Mars is the real deal. One of the few keeping R&B alive.

by Anonymousreply 5March 5, 2021 4:57 PM

The song might be a slow grower. I don't think it's out-of-the-box hit. Good thing about him, he doesn't follow trends but set his own.

by Anonymousreply 6March 5, 2021 4:59 PM

[Quote] OMG. It's like Teddy Pendergrass reborn.

What? You know nothing about TP.

by Anonymousreply 7March 5, 2021 5:21 PM

You all do know it's Anderson Paak driving this car, right?

by Anonymousreply 8March 5, 2021 5:24 PM

[quote]What? You know nothing about TP.

Au contraire. This sounds lifted straight out of his Bluenotes era. Now back to your Bieber and Timberlake, son.

by Anonymousreply 9March 5, 2021 5:41 PM

[quote]BTW, is it true that he's not even a little bit black? Because he deliberately tries to make himself look it

If you've seen the videos of him as a kid performer he looks exactly the same. It's just how the genetics cookie crumbles. Who knows what hidden branches are in his family tree. His sisters - the singing group The Lylas -are more fair than Bruno.

How general of you.

It has more in common with the Thom Bell sound and the Philly Groove label than anything. The Delfonics, The Stylistics, the Spinners and New York City. HMBD are not connected to Bell other than being in the Philly Sound family.

by Anonymousreply 11March 5, 2021 6:01 PM

Bruno needs to come out already, we all know Bruno. He's Filipino and Mexican, heavy catholic all around, hence the closet.

by Anonymousreply 12March 5, 2021 9:22 PM

He's not Mexican, dumbass.

Uploaded the exact time as Drake's new track, and so far they're beating Drake's flat, bland, monotonous, interchangeable commercial dreck. Nice to know there are still people with good taste.

Interesting how two non-black men, Bruno Mars & Lin-Manuel Miranda, have done more for the tradition of black music than any black artists in recent times.

by Anonymousreply 15March 6, 2021 4:04 AM

Because white people like black music more when it comes from non-blacks.

by Anonymousreply 16March 6, 2021 4:07 AM

I like gay men who come out...So I don't like Bruno Mars. Or Hunter Hayes. Or Shawn Mendes.

by Anonymousreply 17March 6, 2021 4:12 AM

R13 so what, Puerto Rican close enough.

by Anonymousreply 18March 6, 2021 4:12 AM

[quote] BTW, is it true that he's not even a little bit black? Because he deliberately tries to make himself look it, and carries himself as if he is. The vibe, swag and even his accent.

So stealth, R2. At least you revealed your agenda early.

by Anonymousreply 19March 6, 2021 4:13 AM

Anderson Paak is amazing. Bruno is good, but let's not overlook Paak.

by Anonymousreply 20March 6, 2021 4:26 AM

What agenda, r20? I adore Bruno Mars. Haven't felt this way about a Soul/R&B singer since D'Angelo.

by Anonymousreply 21March 6, 2021 4:27 AM

^ Sorry, meant r19. And I agree with r20. Paak is carrying this particular track.

by Anonymousreply 22March 6, 2021 4:29 AM

“So if you’re tryna lay in these arms”...

Keeping one foot firmly planted in the 21st Century with that Millennial phraseology. Ugh.

The composition is obviously like 70s smooth soul/R&B, but I would never be fooled into thinking it was produced in that era. They was tryna lay those vocal effects on way too thick in the mixing stage.

by Anonymousreply 23March 6, 2021 6:01 AM

[quote]so what, Puerto Rican close enough.

No.

by Anonymousreply 26March 6, 2021 10:13 AM

R23, we are in the 21st century, so it makes sense that the song would have millennial? Gen Z? Phraseology.

In any case, a great song as we head into spring - it took me back to listening to Stylistics records with my aunt. I’m also glad to see Anderson Paak getting more notice - R&B has been given short shrift in favor of trap hop for far too long.

by Anonymousreply 27March 6, 2021 10:20 AM

He's always been paying homage to the past. This is his Grammy performance from 2012.

Bruno is a very talented singer and musician but not an original bone in his body!!! For the last several years, all his new music has been is imitating the sound of 70s and 80s r&b music. So he's not coming up with any new styles himself, just redoing great sounds that the kids likely haven't heard yet unless they like older music

by Anonymousreply 29March 6, 2021 10:51 AM

Kind of boring but I can appreciate it.

by Anonymousreply 30March 6, 2021 10:53 AM

People are calling it "Philly Soul".

[Quote] People are calling it "Philly Soul".

That's nothing new.

by Anonymousreply 32March 7, 2021 4:15 AM

Put r31 on "ignore" and half the thread disappears.

by Anonymousreply 33March 7, 2021 4:16 AM

[Quote] Philadelphia soul, sometimes called Philly soul, the Philadelphia sound, Phillysound, or TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia), is a genre of late 1960s–1970s soul music characterized by funk influences and lush instrumental arrangements, often featuring sweeping strings and piercing horns. The genre laid the groundwork for disco by fusing the R&B rhythm sections of the 1960s with the pop vocal tradition, and featuring a slightly more pronounced jazz influence in its melodic structures and arrangements. Fred Wesley, the trombonist of the James Brown band and Parliament-Funkadelic, described the signature deep but orchestrated sound as "putting the bow tie on funk."

by Anonymousreply 34March 7, 2021 4:24 AM

This is way better than most of the disposable pop music available today.

by Anonymousreply 35March 7, 2021 5:31 AM

[quote]Put [R31] on "ignore" and half the thread disappears.

And? Am I supposed to be ashamed of something? I'm a fan of this record and what it represents. And I'm not lying or talking to myself, just trying to keep this thread alive and hope more people latch on support the project. I'm tired of Drake ruling the airwaves.

Now, r33. Ask yourself why you have a problem with someone doing something as harmless as hyping music.

by Anonymousreply 36March 7, 2021 7:56 AM

And r33, I've tried putting you on ignore myself and it seems like you're just as interested in this thread yourself. Again, what's the beef?

by Anonymousreply 37March 7, 2021 8:03 AM

Wow, this song and video are fantastic. Love them. Bruno is like a breath of fresh air in the current music scene. I hope this song is a huge hit for him.

by Anonymousreply 38March 7, 2021 12:11 PM

Love it.

It's ok with me Mars isn't doing anything "new". New died with Louis Armstrong.

All day, give me talented iterations of the Chi-Lites, the Stylistics, Delfonics...

by Anonymousreply 39March 7, 2021 1:30 PM

[quote]Uploaded the exact time as Drake's new track, and so far they're beating Drake's flat, bland, monotonous, interchangeable commercial dreck. Nice to know there are still people with good taste.

You're clueless. Drake's new song is doing 3x better than Bruno's song and is projected to debut at #1 on the Hot 100 next week. Bruno at #5.

by Anonymousreply 40March 7, 2021 4:01 PM

Bruno Mars is the least original musician since Lady Gaga.

by Anonymousreply 41March 7, 2021 4:46 PM

r40 - That's because Drake's song is radio-friendly, meaning it'll get more airplay. But Bruno and Paak are getting more views on YouTube.

by Anonymousreply 42March 7, 2021 5:07 PM

Stop acting like a victim r31/r36. You're not. You're just mad because I called you out and schooled you on some music history. That's why you put me on "ignore." You're annoyed with me because I'm correct.

[Quote] like you're just as interested in this thread yourself.

My comments DO NOT make up half of this thread but nice try. Yes, that's weird of you. Do you have OCD issues or Aspergers?

by Anonymousreply 43March 7, 2021 5:11 PM

You're a nut and seem like the type to pick a fight with his own shadow. Seek help, r43.

Oh, and you "schooled" no one on this thread, except highlight what a pompous, pedantic ass you are.

by Anonymousreply 44March 7, 2021 5:48 PM

[Quote] You're a nut

Says the guy who has posted 60% of this thread. Okay, crazy! Get back on your meds, OCD, freak.

[Quote] Oh, and you "schooled" no one on this thread

LOL. Clearly I schooled you. That's why you're still mad, hon. No one says. "Bluenotes era." LOL! Oh and Teddy was amazing but he wasn't behind that sound, you ass.

by Anonymousreply 45March 7, 2021 5:59 PM

[Quote] just trying to keep this thread alive and hope more people latch on support the project. I'm tired of Drake ruling the airwaves.

Bruno is an extremely well paid wedding singer.

by Anonymousreply 48March 10, 2021 3:57 PM

For those of you who don't know, there are a subset of ethnic people in Southeast Asia and the Philippines called Negritos- they're short, dark and have afros. My uncle and his daughter both resemble these people (and had magnificent afros). Perhaps some of Bruno's genetic's are from there:

The lyrics leave a little to be desired.

"If ya smoke, I got the haze (purple haze)

If ya hungry, I got the Lays."

by Anonymousreply 50March 10, 2021 6:33 PM

The lyrics are trite. Bruno Mars has never been able to improve that weakness.

by Anonymousreply 51March 11, 2021 5:33 AM

Bruno and Anderson killed it at the Grammys.

On a personal note, my first memory of attraction to men is from the late '70s to early '80s TV. To this day, men in those outfits automatically make me hard. I don't think Bruno Mars or Anderson .Paak are particularly attractive, they're just not my type. But the second I saw them in those suits ... SEXY AF! I need to rub one out.

No, crazy it isn't. Not the way you're doing it. Reread what you're saying, loon. Bruno isn't here and he'll never fuck you, Stan!

I knew you'd bump this up after the Grammys.

by Anonymousreply 55March 15, 2021 7:43 AM

^I don't like him that way, but whatever. You've been consistently wrong about a bunch of stuff. Was this you?

[quote]You're clueless. Drake's new song is doing 3x better than Bruno's song and is projected to debut at #1 on the Hot 100 next week.

Silk Sonic are up to 40 mil views on YouTube while Drake is languishing at 15M.

by Anonymousreply 56March 15, 2021 11:21 AM

^ You have no influence with this Drake vs Silk Sonic shit here at the DL. This is all in your weird head. Are you on the spectrum or are you 10 years old? It's bizarre you're bringing this here of all places. Why not somewhere on social media where there's a huge audience?

by Anonymousreply 57March 15, 2021 3:34 PM

I will take Bruno and Paak over Drake, Bieber, Post Malone, Lil Pump, Ed Sheeran, Shawn Mendes and Lil Yachty.

Bruno writes his songs, sings his songs and plays instruments. Yeah yeah he's derivative but he plays tribute to older music and is talented and musically literate enough to do it well.
