I must be in the minority of DL'ers who aren't enamored with the guy and think he's the best game show host ever. Seems like a decent guy but I don't get what the fuss was about. Pancreatic cancer is a tough one to beat, my aunt was diagnosed as stage 3 as a 45-year-old and she was dead within a year. Trebek at least got the best care and he lived a full, long life until the end.

A couple weeks. He was filming until Oct 29 and those will go out in December. Many cancer patients hold up somewhat well for a long time and then go downhill very quickly. RGB married a couple about 2 weeks before her passing. It's very difficult to watch and one of the reasons why losing someone to cancer can still be a real shock despite the diagnosis.

Viz. Alex carrying on with his job... I think it can be a common trait of having cancer, that you are so fucking sick of being sick that you rail at it and do things you otherwise would never do. When I was going through chemo I was moving heavy furniture and doing housework (I also had two schwarms, one was baking and the other was a craze for shellfish).
It becomes an annoyance, the doctors, being a human sacrifice when you're constantly having your blood drawn. It will try the patience of anybody. It's the survivors guilt that hits at times like this that's the worst of making it, though.

R72 I agree that Alex had shown courage in concurrently battling cancer and working. However, there is more than one correct way to fight against and live with cancer. Retiring early due to cancer diagnosis/ treatment should be individual choice and not be viewed as a sign of weakness or as withdrawing from being a contributing member of society. How a persons battles against cancer should be done in ways that best fits his life and situation. Obviously Alex had a job and support system which allowed him to continue working right up until the end. Also, a patient should have the option of retiring early even if he has great support and resources at his disposal without being judged as not courageous. Of course, many people aren't as fortunate. I think our society's obsession with equating celebrities' struggles with those of average people is messed up because it's not applicable most of the time.

With pancreatic stage 4 cancer you can be managing okay for a while and have a sudden downturn or a new symptom such as an infection or respiratory issue and go within days or even hours. My uncle had it and was given 6 months. After 5 weeks he went into a sudden respiratory arrest and was gone in minutes.
| by Anonymous | reply 116 | November 8, 2020 8:08 PM |
R99 Of course there is more than one way to manage cancer. No one in the world would have faulted him for immediately retiring on diagnosis and spending every last moment he had with his family - he was absolutely entitled to that. I'm just saying that Alex knew he was a public persona and wanted to use his platform for the little time he had left to keep working and raise awareness for Pancreatic cancer. He was truly a special human being and we will miss him.

From the mid-1970s thru the 1980s I lived in the Hollywood Hills not far from the Hollywood Reservoir. In those medieval times, one could walk the circumference of the reservoir and not encounter another soul. I walked the reservoir all the time and frequently crossed paths with Alex Trebeck. A furry fox with a famously bushy stash, he'd nod his head in recognition whenever we met on the path. I'd like to tell you how he shoved his mighty man meat down my throat but it never came to that. I believe the tall Farrahesque bitch who always accompanied him ruined our romance..

LeVar Burton would make a good host

I. would like to see Samuel L Jackson as the new host !

Rosie O'Donnell for the host!

Jane Lynch for replacement host?

R49, On the Classic Concentration reruns on BUZZR, Alex repeatedly took jabs at his first wife and their divorce.
His persona then was entirely different than Jeopardy! . . . he came across as a ladies man on the prowl with the female contestants.

That Jennings creep will ruin the show, with his fake smile and constant smirking. No no no.
| by Anonymous | reply 160 | November 9, 2020 1:38 AM |
I don't want Jennings. I would actually prefer Brad. Hell, even Austin.
You know it will be Ken, but I like the idea of LeVar Burton.
| by Anonymous | reply 161 | November 9, 2020 1:51 AM |
RIP Alex.
I wouldn’t mind it being Levar Burton, but he’s pretty old too, TBH. My mom tells me she made out with Levar in Vegas once. She was apparently “fast”, so I kinda believe her.

I don't care who gets the job, as long as they don't dumb the show down. I don't want any "Family Feud"-type hosts. If it came down to Ken Jennings, James Holzhaeur (?), Brad Rutter, or Austin hosting, who would be the popular choice?
Funny, 163 posts and NOBODY has mentioned original host Art Fleming. (And Fleming was in Greg Kihn's "Jeopardy" music video!)
| by Anonymous | reply 164 | November 9, 2020 3:03 AM |
I'd like to see Neil DeGrasse Tyson as a host. I think he would bring the perfect blend of personality and obvious intelligence.
| by Anonymous | reply 166 | November 9, 2020 3:10 AM |
Art Fleming also had a cameo, spoofing his "Jeopardy" hosting gig, in "Airplane!"
| by Anonymous | reply 167 | November 9, 2020 3:15 AM |
R167 he did? When? I’ve seen that movie 1,000 times. Please point me to it.
| by Anonymous | reply 168 | November 9, 2020 3:19 AM |
My mistake, R168. Art Fleming is in "Airplane II: The Sequel." At one point, the movie cuts to the inside of the cabin, where Art is hosting a "Jeopardy" round with some of the passengers as contestants,

I think Buzzy Cohen would make a good host. Smart, cute, personable, loves the show.

I'd prefer someone from Star Trek Voyager instead of TNG.
Kate Mulgrew or Jeri Ryan for female candidates.
Robert Picardo or Garrett Wang for male choices.

Due to my exclusively, powerfully heterosexual nature, I often dreamt of engaging in passionate penetrative sex with Alex.

R176 Jenny Jones had a episode of her 90s talk show where she had guests on that said they slept with famous people.
I recall Kelsey G., Crystal Bernard & Vanna White being named (among others).

It was announced last week that the 'Jeopardy' GOAT trio will be on a new ABC game show. I recall Alex giving an interview around the time when his diagnosis was made public, and I believe he pin-pointed a black, female college professor whom he thought should host when he retired. I'll try to find the interview and post it.

R178 here again...I can't find the interview I referenced above, but in this one (from July, whilst promoting his memoir) he jokingly mentions Betty White as his replacement.

Regarding Trebek's party affiliation, in an interview in 2018, he described himself as a political moderate, and as a registered Independent.
'"In a 2018 interview with Vulture, Trebek said he was a political moderate and registered independent, neither conservative nor liberal, with some libertarian leanings." This was from Wikipedia

levar burton, this is a good one too. I still love Anita Hill. Alex's death is so sad. I love Jeopardy with Alex. It's like going home to me.

In the special on ABC last night, they showed him in his garage. His workshop was immaculate and he claimed to have every screw or nut ever invented, all labeled and filed away in little drawers. There must've been thousands of them. I can't imagine Alec having it any other way. Why are Canadian men so hot?
| by Anonymous | reply 184 | November 9, 2020 9:22 AM |
Alex was a great host because he stayed out of the game and read the questions. He kept the game moving.
| by Anonymous | reply 185 | November 9, 2020 10:08 AM |
Alex Trebek was the perfect Jeopardy host. It won't be the same without him.

Alex was one of the few people working in American broadcasting that always used proper pronunciation. Most presenters on USA TV and radio do not do their homework. Peace out Alex.

Paris Hilton should host, particularly now that America knows her "airhead blonde" persona was just an act!
She can wear some super-cute designer glass frames.
| by Anonymous | reply 195 | November 9, 2020 3:24 PM |
We need Tiffany Trump to become host. Every time a contestant gets an answer right she'll be like, "Yassss queen, you did it! My father loves you!"
