Will be north of Boston in mid-June, thinking of driving to Montreal to visit my nephew and fabulous daughter in law. Google maps says the drive is about 5 hours, but wondering if there is a time delay at the border for customs, passport inspections, etc.. Will be in a rental car.
Am hoping that rescue-chick and perhaps others might offer some ideas and advice about the time it takes for crossing the border from Vermont into Canada. Nephew grew up with me in California, hates "The East Coast" the wife is from France and doesn't drive. They want their Eldergay Uncles to visit but can't offer travel advice. I've been to both Montreal and Vermont - both wonderful - but have never driven across. My MA husband is 150% French Canadian and yet has never been to "Canadia". Need to fix that.
My only experience with driving across international borders has been between San Diego and Tijuana. It was rather unpleasant. Hoping this experience might be less of a hassle. Sending merci beaucoups in advance!

Point the car north and go. It's not that hard.

Some refilling of the gas tank may be required.
There are not a lot of rest stops in Vermont.
The drive seems endless. Probably not to you, since you're from California. I know people in CA who do this kind of drive every weekend to their ski or lake destinations.

Crossing the border there is easy, OP. There might be a line if you travel on a busy day, but US/Canada customs is generally fast and easy.

This sounds like the "my son just published a book" thread.

R3 here. I should have said crossing into Canada is generally smooth and easy IF you don't bring any guns. Don't bring guns, not even your peepaw's hunting rifle.

A empty gallon size bucket

The intro is unnecessarily detailed and autobiographical, it has little to do with advice for driving from Boston to Montreal.

Yeah, it's no big deal to cross the border in Vermont. I lost my id in Montreal in 2005 and they waved my still drunk (not the driver) ass through laughing all the way. Plan on the drive seeming endless and look at it as country road trip. Bring snacks, be cool with peeing on the side of the road if necessary.

It’ll be just like Tijuana, nothing to worry about.

R9 Look at Michiko Kakutani there performing literary criticism on a post!

R14 It was a reference to the comment on how it was like the "my son just published a book" thread.

Don't strap a dog to the top of the station wagon.

Thank you, my DL Lovelies. Looks like it's a green light for a drive up into the Canadia. The DL never disappoints, complete with @r18 Mitt Romney reference, @rr10 rescue-chick graciously responding, then later revealing that she's been to TJ - you can't get the Donkey reference unless you've been there - and that confesses a certain je ne sais sleaze pas. See? Already practicing Frenchish and planning to not to be too drunk when crossing the border. Might stop at an animal shelter in Burlington, VT to make a donation in r-c's honor. Am excited. Sending mucho bizous to both cheeks!
