That's been a government holiday in DC for a while now.
| by Anonymous | reply 1 | June 15, 2021 11:57 PM |
Hopefully people with celebrate this new holiday solemnly, and with the same amount of quiet reflection as they do Memorial day.
| by Anonymous | reply 2 | June 15, 2021 11:58 PM |
People who don’t work for the government or in financial services will be working that day. I’m all for removing all paid holidays that are ones most companies don’t observe.
| by Anonymous | reply 3 | June 16, 2021 12:02 AM |
So much easier than passing a law to ensure the right to vote.
| by Anonymous | reply 5 | June 16, 2021 12:13 AM |
Just Democrats pandering to black people.
I wonder what holiday they will pass to pander to Latinos? Will May 5th be the next national holiday?
What about Native Americans? What about Asians? Why isn't June 28th (the day of the Stonewall riots) a national holiday? What about the day that women got the right to vote (August 18)?

Good. Now let's teach about it in school. I never heard of it until 1998 when I moved into my place which is a couple of blocks from where they hold the festival.
| by Anonymous | reply 12 | June 16, 2021 12:36 AM |
OP, the holiday won’t be national until next year, at the earliest.

R3: "I’m all for removing all paid holidays that are ones most companies don’t observe."
Me: I'm all for requiring companies to start giving private-sector employees the same paid holidays that federal employees get.
| by Anonymous | reply 19 | June 16, 2021 10:39 AM |
R6 Columbus Day is now referred to by many of us as Indigenous Peoples' Day. The feds haven't made that official but some states have.
I fully support Juneteenth being made a federal holiday given what it represents. If July 4 deserves a holiday to recognize freedom from monarchy, then freedom from slavery certainly deserves similar recognition. Many black people here in D.C. have cemebrated Juneteenth and have taken it off work for family and community gatherings for many decades now. It's not an invented holiday; it's just new to many white people, and we should know what it's about.
Once the holiday actually gains relatively meaningless status as just another day off and doesn't require explanation to white people, then we'll probably be closer to social equality.
| by Anonymous | reply 20 | June 16, 2021 10:47 AM |
Poor r6, probably doesn’t have a job anyway to take time off from.

It shows how deeply rooted white supremacy is in American culture that it took this long for a country that's always yelling FREEDOM at the top of its lungs to get around to officially celebrating the end of slavery.

| by Anonymous | reply 40 | June 16, 2021 4:38 PM |
We may need to shrink Pride Month to Pride Week so as not to conflict with the upcoming marketing push for Juneteenth. Brands won't know whether to run Pride promotions with gay people and rainbows or Juneteenth promotions with black people and all hell will break loose.
That or swap Pride Month and Black History Month

But also, Juneteenth makes a hell of a lot more sense and is a lot less problematic than the Cultural Appropriation fest that is Kwanzaa.
| by Anonymous | reply 48 | June 16, 2021 5:03 PM |
Kwanzaa seems to be fading though R48 and lots of Black people took a step back and said "wait, we are Christians and celebrate Christmas. What's this Kwanzaa shit?"

| by Anonymous | reply 58 | June 16, 2021 7:05 PM |
If they don't appease black people, then the black people will just keep allowing themselves to be killed by cops and we'll never hear the end of it! Why do black people have to be so difficult?

All these private companies and corporations that have been paying lip service over the last year to how woke and inclusive they are, and how much they value diversity, and how much they believe that Black Lives Matter.... those companies are going to have to put up now and give all their employees Juneteenth off. R17, the Canadian record on tribes is very poor, so look to yourself, not down your nose at us. Columbus Day is celebrated as Indigenous People's Day in many places and Cinco de Mayo is now discouraged as a drinking holiday. Do you even know--without googling--what Cinco de Mayo is about? This is a step in the right direction but negative people don't know how to be happy about it.

R101, why is it a 'performative gesture?' Can't it be a reformative permanent improvement?
R102, being racist is always finding something wrong with any action that benefits one or more minorities. You could, instead, be happy for black Americans and immediately call your congresspersons to demand voting rights and police reform legislation.
| by Anonymous | reply 103 | June 18, 2021 7:25 PM |
R102 Because those groups do not have the same Experience in the US as blacks. Hispanics and Asians have plenty of holidays of their own to celebrate. Plus, just like European Americans, their ancestors decided to move to the US. African Americans did not. We should also do a day for Native Americans and then that is enough. Not everyone needs a day. But blacks and native Americans deserve this little bit at least.
