Adele tops the list with only two albums. Regardless if you like her music or not--that's amazing. Katy Perry, Beyonce and Gaga don't cut it. That shows how far Gaga declined from The Fame (until recently).

R5, Britney isn't on the same level because she never really sold a ton of singles the way Madonna, Adele and Madonna did with their back-to-back successes. When you take singles and additional sales generated by compilations (which often cannibalize album sales, especially in Madonna's case), Adele, Madonna and Celine are in a class of their own. Falling into You and Let's talk about love sold a combined 88 million and True Blue and Like a Virgin sold almost 77 million. 25 seems low right now on the list, but considering streaming, I'm sure it is actually much higher now.

R7, no it isn't--those numbers are accurate. That list isn't just pure album sales--it is including sales generated by compilations, pure album sales, accompanying singles sales, music video sales, streaming, etc. You're right Tapestry isn't on there, there are many artists they haven't covered yet (they acknowledge this). There is a separate list on the site for pure album sales (here it is).

R10, I agree with you, but when you sell a ton of a LOT of different songs in single form, that is still very impressive. That is what puts Madonna over the top--the amount of physical singles she sold is incredible, no other female even comes close. Whitney is her closet competitor and she is 25 million away from her. Mariah and Celine are surprising--they sold almost half of her amount of singles. Janet actually sold more than Celine in terms of physical singles.
