I have a theory that a lot of heavily tattooed people are depressed/lonely/missing some purpose in their life-and they temporarily lift that depression or fill a void by getting another tattoo. Then the lift fades and they start over.

Doesn’t mean we don’t love them, though. It’s just an outward manifestation.
| by Anonymous | reply 15 | October 1, 2021 9:51 PM |
People with tattoos get really defensive when someone doesn't love their tattoos (see R9). After all, tattoos are permanent and no one wants to know that they permanently look silly and deranged so they lash out at even the slightest criticism. According to them, if you don't like tattoos you're dumb, or old, or square, or fat, etc.
I saw a study once that said that people cover themselves in tattoos as a way to "claim" their skin, specifically from a sexual abuser. Sometimes when I see sleeve tatts I assume the person was diddled as a kid and is still reeling from the assault. So I mostly pity the overly tatted.
Or maybe I'm just dumb or square, etc.
| by Anonymous | reply 16 | October 1, 2021 9:52 PM |
I don't mind if it's a tattoo or two, but to cover your entire body...especially the face and neck makes me question....what happened to them in their lives. It seems to be a compensation of something.

R13, my 18-year old is facing peer pressure to get one. She’ll praise the ones her friends have but that’s not good enough. Her “best” friend called her a pussy for not getting inked up. I tried explaining about people who feel attacked if other people don’t hew to the same exact agenda. *looks around DL*
She has a friend who’s 17 and has some stars tatted on her cheekbone. I asked how she found an artist in NYC who’d work on an underage person. Some person she knew did it prison-style with a needle and ink, somehow. I had a friend in the 80s who gave herself a small teardrop on her forearm that way. She was a complete borderline who is covered in them, now.
I imagine these people tearing through life, chewing up the scenery, chasing something they’ll never catch. It’s sad.

Some of those tattoos are well done and are very artistic and beautiful..in the hands of the right tattoo artist. If you're going to have them, at least make sure they are quality. The rinky-dink, self tattoo...or the person doing it is inexperienced...using you for practice is really a disaster, being permanent. I think of that guy in the movie...The King Of Staten Island. There is a link between tattoos and completed suicide. Thomas Joiner, in his interpersonal theory of suicide, posits that people who kill themselves have become habituated to pain in some capacity, whether through physical or sexual abuse, combat, self-mutilation, tattoos, etc.
More broadly, Joiner's theory states that suicide is difficult, and that certain factors have to line up in a single individual (desire for suicide plus capacity for suicide) to lead to a successful suicide.

I have two psychiatrist friends in two different parts of the world and both have volunteered a resounding Yes to the mentally ill question. Neither is one to offer much unprovoked insight about their work, though another thing they both commented upon is that true hoarders are incurable, untreatable — lost causes — they can only be managed a bit in some circumstances under strict, daily supervision.
I'm inclined to agree on the tattoos. Past a certain point it's indicative of some problems. I'm not bothered by tattoos myself, excepting the gruesome face ones that look they they were done in prison, with a spoon, or the pointilist drawings of ugly babies or Mee-Maws or some gangster who got caught in crossfire. But letting them spread too far on the parts of the body that cannot be easily clothed is generally a bad sign. Genuinely artistic tattoos that are considered in their placement are sometimes interesting.

DL catnip:
[quote]"Pierced identities: Body modification, borderline personality features, identity, and self-concept disturbances."
[quote]Abstract: Little is known about the connection between body modification and borderline personality disorder (BPD). This study investigated the relation between a wide range of body modification practices (piercing, tattooing, scarification, pubic hair removal, and cosmetic surgery) and BPD features, with a special focus on identity and identity dysfunction, in an adult community sample (N = 330). Results indicated BPD features were positively correlated with total number of body modifications and breadth of body modification practices endorsed, as well as, specifically, increased piercings, tattoos, and scarifications. Furthermore, identity problems (i.e., identity diffusion and low self-concept clarity) were associated with body modifications. Implications of these findings are discussed, including their heuristic value in understanding body modification in light of its connection to BPD (and particularly identity/self-concept functions).

Correlation is not causation.
Those studies are like the one that says people who drink diet sodas die sooner. There's no actual connection that we know of (as of yet) that says diet soda causes death. The same goes for the body modification studies. The primary problem with them is that the definition of body modification differs; some consider plastic surgery for eye bags the same as earlobe stretching, for instance.

Everything, including tattoos, is contextual, and mental illness is a social construct, r84.
That tattoos have been linked to mental illness in the West in no way reflects other cultures, who have different ideas about both mental illness and tattoos.
[quote]Are tattoos associated with negative health-related outcomes and risky behaviors?
[quote]Results: We find that the presence, number, and specific features of tattoos are positively correlated with two of the health-related outcomes (ever diagnosed with a mental health issue and trouble sleeping) and all three of the risky behaviors (P < .05). Magnitudes are larger for those with multiple, visible, and offensive tattoos.
[quote]Conclusions: Our results suggest that individuals with tattoos are more likely to engage in risky behaviors relative to their non-tattooed counterparts, which may lead to health consequences. Dermatologists, healthcare providers, and public health advocates should recognize that having a tattoo(s) is a potential marker for mental health issues and risky behaviors.

When you look at this pic of Georgia May Jagger and Paris Jackson at Vivienne Westwood’s Womenswear Spring/Summer 2022 show, the heavily tattooed Jackson simply looks dirty. The tattoos kill Jackson's look. Rather than make her look edgy, she looks like a mental patient.
From the neck up, she is far more classically beautiful than Jagger. From the neck down, Jackson's haphazardly placed toddler scribbles scream damaged goods.
