Maria Callas was overrated as fuck. Her voice was ugly. Montserrat Caballé's vissi d'arti is superior to Callas' rendition. Though I'll give Callas her due for her E flat in Aida.

Angelina’s first lead actress Oscar?
| by Anonymous | reply 8 | October 21, 2022 6:33 PM |
Perfect casting. All they'll have to do is give her a fake nose, pad her clothes, give her a wig and some winged eyeliner, teach her to speak Italian, and have someone else sing for her. Minor details!
| by Anonymous | reply 9 | October 21, 2022 6:40 PM |
Wait the plot is about her last days? Hope it's a lot of flashbacks, but I hate movies setup like that. Thought it would be more career-spanning. Nothing interesting happened to Callas in her final years. She was basically a recluse. Guessing this will be the "Iron Lady." Who will play Onassis and will Jackie be in this?
| by Anonymous | reply 10 | October 21, 2022 6:48 PM |
This role was made for Celine. She has wanted it for two decades. It's true. She looks like Callas and understands vocal training and DIVAdom. Sadness too. Deprivation and starvation.
The Callas documentary is a gorgeous piece of storytelling in itself. Who ever plays this role - will get a lot of attention. Callas's life had every kind of human heartbreak, temperament, tragedy and triumph.

I cannot imagine anyone less suited for this role than Angelina Jolie, who is a beautiful face devoid of talent that has been elevated to stardom through nepotism. She is an inexpressive actress at best, mostly plays herself and her main concern always is to look sexy and convey her self-importance as a public figure.
Maria Callas was a complex woman whose personality and voice were polarizing. She was deliriously pretentious, arrogant, far less educated than one would have expected, intelligent, elegant in spite of her weight, mysterious, an unreasonable, calculating diva who had fucked every old, powerful man who could help her career and a very vulnerable, insecure person who was relentlessly mistreated during her childhood and adolescence and, probably because of this, fell in love with the boorish, rudely petulant, abusive and greedy Aristoteles Onassis. On top of that, she had an ugly, powerful voice that was incredibly agile, elastic and expressive, not to mention that her range was rather spectacular - she was an assoluta who could sing it all and make it sound believable, not to mention that she rescued bel canto from oblivion and brought opera to the masses, in spite of her hideous tone.
A great actress is needed to play someone so unique and complex. Miss Jolie and her deformed lips, dead eyes, skeleton-like figure, plastic boobs and Bono-styled hypocrisy, won't be up to scratch and will try to make everything about herself, as per usual.
personally, I think that either Glenn Close or Meryl Streep would be better suited for the role. Gaga is a very limited actress and her acting can only be described as a series of stilted affectations. Her House of Gucci performance was awful and clichéd, but she'd still do a better job with Maria Callas than Angelina Jolie and her I Know You Wanna Fuck Me style of acting.

I have never understood why people say Angelina Jolie looks like an Old Hollywood starlet. That might apply to Nicole Kidman, Cate Blanchett, Naomi Watts, or Julianne Moore but not Jolie.
As R64 said, Jolie thrives in roles where she can push her sexuality as aggressively as possible, which is 90% of her early filmography. The problem is she hasn't been able to do that the last couple of years because she's outgrown that phase, which is why she's been so desperate to prove herself as a director and she failed in that as well. She has very little talent and has coasted by on her looks, nepotism, and a failed marriage.

Larrain is exactly the wrong person to tell this story (he’s a ridiculous fantasist), but a biopic of Callas has been a long time coming. Any major actress would want to do it. I hope that Jolie doesn’t think she’s going to be taking a couple of lessons and singing on film. Jolie couldn’t even come close to Callas at her very worst touring with Del Monaco.

[R44} The post that said she's "too skinny, too old" .... If you read the article the movie's about Maria Callas' last days in Paris. To whomever it was upthread who never saw "The Changeling" but thought Jolie looked good in it - she wasn't. She was awful. She sucked the life out of what was an interesting story with a competent director (Eastwood) and a very strong supporting cast. She ruined the entire movie and I wanted to punch her in the face.
Callas is an interesting figure. It could be a winner but not with Jolie in it. Her fuckability is fading and she doesn't have talent to fall back on. Blanchett would be fine, otherwise go to the Europeans, Cotilliard or even Penelope Cruz. Maybe Catherine Keener or Famke Jansen could do it?
Basically anyone but Jolie - she's a horrible actress and I don't want to see her ruin what would otherwise be a film I'd like to see.

Yeah, R101. Margot Fonteyn. An astounding life full of adventure and accomplishments. It's not just about her May September romance with Rudolph and her age defying rule as THE prima ballerina. She ran guns, she overthrew governments, she was delicate and perfect and ladylike and radical and possibly insane. She was weak somewhere underneath all that discipline. And it wasn't for romance.
She WAS also the greatest ballerina of all time until that kind of proclamation went out of fashion.
I am 39 years old so I know about Callas and Fonteyn mostly from the Palmer documentaries. Back when documentaries were real things that took years to make and much travel and courtship to accomplish. The Fonteyn one is freaking astounding in its surprises and everyday truths. And she was the most gorgeous dancer. A bit pristine.....but nothing like a diva in real life. More of a gangster.
Margot suffered through terrible cancer to attend one last gala, Princess Diana was there. Fonteyn spent her last years almost penniless to buy her paralyzed despot husband more cattle or to finance his failed revolutions. They didn't even have a phone. She absolutely subsidized a few murders. HIS family accompanied her to her death bed back in the US, to make sure she signed her life away on the line. One of the most famous women in the world for 35 years. She was such vulnerable prey. Why?
Tony Palmer made a very good film about Fonteyn. And then a great one with all the unedited footage, after she died.
There is such beauty in this documentary - gorgeous dancing and performances.
But it's heartbreaking.

There seems to be a generational gap between those who dislike Angelina and remembered her for the attention whore antics and those who weren’t born during those times and worship her for being a saint. Same with Brad the dinosaurs love him while the gen z hate him and believe he is a wife beater and child abuser.

I'm far from an Angie hater but I haven't been a fan in decades.
I thought she was very exotic and cool when she rose to prominence in the late 90s. Her performance in Gia was electrifying. I liked some other things she did around that time too.
Then she became a weirdo when the brother kissing; locket of blood wearing; spouse stealing; making out with Billy Bob Thorton at inappropriate times and places shenanigans started.
She's calmed down over the years but it's become apparent that she doesn't really have a lot of range in her acting. And as for the edginess and uniqueness that defined her earlier career, the novelty has worn off.

Angelina is hit or miss but I think she's got it in her to knock this out of the park. I agree with many others, this is just the kind of role Gaga needs and would have been perfect for. Also, not for nothing, Meryl may be 70+ but she looks great and think she could (more than convincably) play Callas in her 50s. It's not like the woman was the picture of health at that time.

She's gotten too lazy to knock anything out of the ballpark. Long ago she resorted to falling back on acting ticks and tricks and we should have believed her when she said she never wanted to be an actress (she felt pressured by her mother) and is not that interested in it.
