Oh my, that's very sad. I worked with her briefly while I was in a different organization.

She was a huge part of the movement that eventually resulted in same sex marriage. She'd been doing that work for 25+ years before that win.
May she have a peaceful transition. Thank you for your efforts.

It still surprises me that she's the aunt of the appalling and hideous enbie clown Alok Vaid-Menon.

Wait.... what??
Are you worried she's going to encounter bad traffic on her soul's way to the Pearly Gates??

Maybe in the wake of her death, her absolute waste of space nephew will actually do something worthwhile for the community.
Nah.....

Sorry, 'peaceful transition" is a generic sort of Buddhist-y way of saying I hope her passing was peaceful.
Did not mean to imply trans.

How sad. She’s so young to die.

Back when the gay and lesbian movement cared about lesbians and didn’t throw them under the bus for the T.
She was awesome and is a good example of a lesbian being butch but not wanting to chop your tits off and be a man.

She was quite visible on the news and some of the afternoon talk shows around the time that I was coming out to my family.
In a way she helped the country see that being gay/lesbian was normal and that homophobia was abnormal and anti-family.
I remember phone conversations with my mother back in the early 1990s when she would mention having seen her on Larry King (!) or on Phil Donahue's shows and saying what "a nice person" she was.
Urvashi Vaid was intelligent, funny, and sweet, and I was fortunate to have seen her speak at one of the gay organizations I belonged to back then. It was no surprise that she received a rousing ovation after her speech.
So while I'm sad to hear the news that she died, I know the world is a better place because she lived.

I only just heard about this!! She was such a hero to me growing up—a major LGBT face in the media . Even my mom loved her

I had a very short conversation with her once. I was at some Bway show and Vaid and Kate Clinton were sitting in front of me. At the end, I tapped Vaid’s shoulder and told her how much I was indebted to her for all she had done for the LGBT movement. She was so nice and thanked me. She asked me about my life and partner. Very sweet. So so sad to hear this

OP here. I'm really happy to see so many people have remembered her. She was a name that was everywhere in gay and lesbian rights when I was a college student, and someone whom I had kind of forgotten about in recent times. I was very saddened to hear of her death but I am happy to be celebrating her on here with so many.
