A question of caffeine, learned friends

Can a third cup of coffee in the morning interfere with my ability to fall back asleep after waking almost 24 hours later?

Just smoke copious amounts of pot.

I’m on a break from copious amounts of pot, sadly.

Do you notice a difference between 2 and 3 cups? How it effects you not how it effects others should be your guide.

Are you in the habit of having caffeine as of late? If not, even that amount could make sleep more precarious, depending on your sensitivity.

I know when I've been off caffeine and then have some (in the morning), I can still feel it in my system when I go to sleep. But that awareness wears off as you get used to be permanently "wired" to some extent.

Boring alert. (You may want to skip over this)

My sleep cycle has been going through some changes. I used to stay up until 2 AM or so, then get up at 8 to feed the cat and go back for a couple more hours, but lately I’ve been feeling tired earlier, so I’m asleep by midnight and stay up after feeding the cat at 8. However, I tend to wake up after the first 4-5 hours of sleep. I usually look at the internet a while, then go back to sleep, but for a while going back to sleep has been harder. Recently I’ve been drinking a third cup of coffee and yesterday I decided not to as an experiment, and last night I did not have any trouble falling asleep.

So it looks like the caffeine is the issue, but I always thought its effects wear off after 6-8 hours.

I really want that third cup right now.

No. I don’t drink caffeine after 3 PM

Caffeine affects people sleep differently, even if it mostly from the morning. Why must you have 3 cups in such a short span of time in the morning.

Also: Drinking coffee immediately after waking can disrupt the natural cortisol rhythm, potentially leading to poor sleep quality and difficulty waking up in the morning. Is is strongly recommended that you wait 90 minutes before consuming your first caffeine to help preserve your natural cortisol pattern. This will also help you from feeling sluggish in the afternoon.

Because I bought an espresso machine that makes yummy espresso, but I still have a large supply of Nespresso pods that none of my friends wanted, so I started to make one Nespresso espresso a day after two cappuccinos from my machine in order to use the capsules. Maybe I’ll just give them away to anyone local who wants them. Or EBay.

Thanks, r7. I didn’t know about the need to wait. It will be hard to wait since the promise of coffee helps get me out of bed.

I'm also wondering if caffeine is hitting me differently as I age. I'm thinking about cutting it out all together to see how it affects my falling/staying asleep. The guy who wrote a book on this subject said he could sleep like a teenager after about 6 months of no caffeine, among other benefits.

From what I’ve read, the reason to wait for your cortisol to decline is that’s when you will most appreciate the caffeine kick, not because drinking it sooner will interfere with your sleep.

I'm also having real trouble with waking after 4 or 5 hours and not being able to get back to sleep.

I bought this and it helps.

Thanks, r11. I’ll try that if cutting back on caffeine doesn’t solve the problem.

There is also coffee alternatives where you can get enegized physical and mentally without the caffeine.

1 Mushroom coffee - the good quality kind contain quality functional mushrooms and herbs. Om Mushrooms is a good brand. Ryze Mushroom coffee is another. Contains about 40% of caffeine found in coffee.

2 NoonBrew Superfood Organic Tea - has quality organic tea with Lions Mane and Chaga mushrooms + beneficial spices and herbs. Contain only 30% of caffeine found in coffee.

For the last few years I take one of the above during the afternoon instead of a coffee and I get a similar pick me up boost without all that caffeine.

If I could find a way to hook myself up intravenously to my espresso machine right after I hit the snooze button I would.

This would be impossible for me.

No. Just drink lots of water, too, to flush the caffeine out of your system. It’s a diuretic, you know . . .

No one can answer that for you, OP. Everyone is different and has different levels of tolerance for drugs like caffeine. I would imagine age is a factor, too. It gets harder to tolerate or process certain things as you age, so someone in their 20s might have a different response in their 50s. You could be decades apart from the people providing answers, making it unlikely you'll have a similar outcome.

Personally I avoid caffeine after 3pm to keep it from disrupting sleep. I usually go to bed around 11pm.
