'Dolemite Is My Name' (2019)

Starring Eddie Murphy, Wesley Snipes, Keegan-Michael Key, Chris Rock, and Tituss Burgess.

[quote]Eddie Murphy portrays real-life legend Rudy Ray Moore, a comedy and rap pioneer who proved naysayers wrong when his hilarious, obscene, kung-fu fighting alter ego, Dolemite, became a 1970s Blaxploitation phenomenon.

No gays were harmed in the making of this movie. (No comment on T's)

Yayyyy for Dolemite, and that motherfuckin’ signifying monkey too !

I love Blaxploitation movies and had many on VHS tapes. I can't watch them now because I don't have a working VCR and it's hard to find them on DVD.

And a historical note, Ric Flair stole one of his most famous catch phrases from Rudy Ray Moore:

[quote]The stylin', profilin', limousine riding, jet flying, kiss-stealing, wheelin' n' dealin' son of a gun!

This should have been a feature film.

It would have made MILLIONS.

by Anonymousreply 4August 12, 2019 9:56 PM

Op said it's on Netflix, R5.

I loved the original movies. My Dad took me to see them back when I was a teenager. Eddie Murphy was the best thing about 'Dreamgirls'. I can't wait to see this.

Those old Dolemite comedy records were some funny shit, man. Some guy had them in my dorm. Mid ‘70s.

by Anonymousreply 15August 13, 2019 1:24 AM

A two-minute trailer about a comedy with characters played by a bunch of comedians and I didn’t laugh once. Not even a light chuckle. Where’s the funny?

by Anonymousreply 16August 13, 2019 1:35 AM

Maybe if you watch the trailer again but this time without your head up your ass, you might get it.

Wesley Snipes was really good in it.

For the young people, yes it really is "Mice elf."

It's not a mistake.

by Anonymousreply 22October 26, 2019 5:28 PM

I roared during that clip ! I will definitely see this !

by Anonymousreply 23October 26, 2019 5:34 PM

Is anyone going to see this? This thread doesn't make it very clear.

Terrific movie, the revelation is Da'Vine Joy Randolph as Lady Reed. She was amazing from her first scene sitting in a bar all the the way thru. Now that lady deserves and Oscar nomination.

Was it mean or did Wesley Snipes play D'Urville Martin really gay?

You can watch "Dolemite" uncut and a great print free on Tubi

just saw Dolemite on Netflix....it was worth watching....very good performances by Titus and Eddie

by Anonymousreply 30November 17, 2019 1:12 AM

The movie is okay, but not very funny and hardly awards caliber.

by Anonymousreply 31November 17, 2019 1:21 AM

There is plenty of humor but I wouldn't categorize it as a comedy, but the Golden Globes will.

by Anonymousreply 32November 17, 2019 9:11 AM

I didn't know the backstory, Dolemite was a real persona from the Blaxploitation days.

by Anonymousreply 35November 17, 2019 11:18 AM

Love Eddie, I miss seeing him in movies

by Anonymousreply 36November 17, 2019 12:36 PM

Loved how the film made $10 million dollars, a shit load of money for the 70s

by Anonymousreply 37November 18, 2019 12:48 AM

I just watched this on Netflix and here are my thoughts:

1) I'm embarrassed to admit that I didn't know the movie was about a real guy. I thought it was just some piece of fiction until the end credits and they showed scenes from the actual Dolemite movie.

2) It felt like Ed Wood with black people to me. Then I saw that the same guys who wrote Ed Wood wrote this movie.

3) I think I laughed in maybe two parts of the movie.

4) Eddie Murphy was fine in it, but I didn't think it was an Oscar-worthy performance. I thought he was much better in Dreamgirls and 48 Hours.

5) Eddie once had a hot body. Holy cow, not anymore. I realize he's almost 60, but yeesh!

by Anonymousreply 39January 26, 2020 3:54 PM

Also, Wesley Snipe's acting was atrocious. So over the top. It was as if he was playing gay, but the guy he was playing wasn't at all like that in real life. Just a strange performance overall.
